It’s already tricky enough to plan meals and shop for groceries when you’re on a tight budget. It’s even harder when you’re trying to practice healthy eating.

But don’t you worry as we have prepared these five easy-to-do tips that would help you eat well while keeping you on your budget:

Purchase fresh produce when it’s in season and place them in the freezer.

There’s nothing like fresh produce to make your meal with. However, these do not come cheap. What you can do is to buy those that are in season and consider stocking up when there’s a good deal to be had.

For example, during the summer, you can buy three to four dozen ears of corn when its price might be two ears for a dollar or less. You can cut it from the ear and freeze it in bags, or freeze it whole. Then you have corn for cheap for several months.

Go hunting for sales, and plan meals appropriately.

Sign up for a savings card at your local grocery store and check the weekly circular to find out what the current deals are. Instead of buying groceries that correspond to what you want to cook, try working the other way around: plan your meals around what’s on sale.

Try less expensive cuts of meat.

While meats can be a bit pricy, there are ways to still enjoy them without breaking the bank. Look for less expensive cuts of meat, such as chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts, and explore various ways to cook them like slow cooking to tenderize those tough cuts or meat.

You can also try bone-in, skin-on, tougher cuts of red meat, and organ meats just to name a few of the options you can try. These are all dirt-cheap, nutritious and savoury!

Try whole grains and beans.

Beans and whole grains, like quinoa, freekeh, and brown rice, offer you an inexpensive and tasty way to supplement your meals. In fact, these can even be meals by themselves.

Whole grains can really bulk up a meal and make it more filling and they’re generally on the cheaper side. Buy a package of wheat berries, whole wheat couscous, cook it up and freeze it in single portions to throw into salads or soups when you need them.

Another great example is black beans, which you can use to stretch your meal. You can spend $15 and get the ingredients to make one mean chilli, which would last you 10 whole meals.

Plan and prepare meals ahead of time.

It’s not a secret: preparing meals ahead of time is the right step towards eating healthy, not to mention a great way to save up on costs while minimising wastage.

Spare some of your time to plan out meals for the entire week. Eating on a budget might mean having to eat leftovers and that’s perfectly all right. Try to prepare your meals on Sunday to get your week off to a great start.
