In organising your curriculum vitae (CV), you should always take time to ponder which jobs you should leave in and which don’t have to be there.

For one, your potential employer might lose interest in reviewing your resume if it is three pages long and filled with every minute detail of your past life. Let’s just say that your employer-to-be does not need to know that you rolled ice creams after school.

Putting in minor jobs can only be relevant if you are new to the workforce and would like to make the impression that you’re motivated to work as well as having the organisational skills to keep a job.

The rule of thumb is to only detail your last three jobs. Previous work experience can be listed down with references of employers, role title and date of employment.

Explain why you’re changing jobs.

If your CV has gaps, much like the tip above, it would be prudent that you also explain this. You may have on maternity leave or you went to travel overseas; whatever the reason maybe, be honest about these in your CV since this will be undoubtedly be checked.

Highlight relevant content.

A relatively irrelevant previous role can be highlighted if it is relevant to the role that you are applying for. For example, if in the job ad, it says, “meet budgets and targets,” mention that you acquired these skills in a previous role.

Emphasise your skills.

If you’ve developed skills from a number of various jobs, then it’s best for you to pen a skills-based CV. Instead of using past employment as the main headings, pinpoint out skills and explain how these were developed.

Format your CV carefully.

Resist the urge to get fancy with your CV. Draw your potential employer’s attention to the positive things that you can offer the company.
